See That Book You Wrote?……. Read It!
Back in 2020, I, like everyone else around me, had my world fall apart from a business perspective, and I found myself with nothing. Single parent, 3 children, mortgage, no financial backing and suddenly no work.
Those who know me, know that I like to help people and quite often give my advice for free (which is kind but doesn’t pay the bills!) Back then, I wanted to do something that would not only help other people but also help me. I had an idea, and I went to Claire Seaton, one of the most helpful Business Gateway Advisors I was lucky enough to know, and pitched a webinar idea of ‘30 Days to Increase Your Local Presence’
This was going to be a webinar of 30 things that small business owners could do, to take control in an uncontrollable time that would leave them with a stronger presence online when we came out of the pandemic. Claire ‘That’s a great idea! Lets run it!’ Me ‘Shit! (I mean great!) I need to write it then 😅
Overcoming Self-Sabotage and Imposter Syndrome
That webinar was hugely popular and I turned it into a series of 30 videos and a book that I published on Amazon with the help of Thea Newcomb and in true Janine style, then did absolutely hee haw to promote it.
Why? Self sabotage, imposter syndrome, all of that going on which was ridiculous! Did I promote my course?….. No. Did I follow my own system?….No
Here I was with not only a digital product that I had recorded, had professionally edited and signed up to the Thinkific platform all ready to sell, I then sat back and for many reasons, did nothing with it! I did have a few signups, but really? Crickets.
Today, I find myself in a similar situation apart from I have better digital assets, shit loads more experience and an even greater desire to succeed.
I’m fed up of letting myself be so affected by those that ‘I think’ are judging me, holding back on posting on LinkedIn ‘in case’ people disagree with me. Letting myself be knocked for six literally for days by logging on and seeing posts from blasts from the past that still haunt me. Why do I hone in on the one person who didn’t give ‘highly satisfied’ as feedback rather than those whose businesses I have helped turn around and who are my biggest advocates? 🤷🏼♀️
I don’t know if anyone has read The Big Leap? Well that’s me…. Read it, it’s probably alot of us to be honest.
Another thing I’m fed up of doing, is buying courses for self validation. I have to, and love to learn, it’s my job to keep on top of the SEO industry as best I can so I can implement and teach others and I know that. I also know now from the probably hundreds of courses I’ve been on that I know this shit as well as anyone else (and much better in some cases), so why aren’t I singing from the trees about it?
Learning from Criticism: Turning Negative Feedback into Fuel
I know why actually; I’m not teflon and I let things affect me.
I was once having a conversation with someone who meant the world to me. We were doing exactly the same job for the same company and I, at that time was being paid substantially less money. I was questioning that and his response was ‘What do you mean? I am worth so much more than you!’ Nice!
I believed I was worth less at the time but now? No More.
I also had an experience when I had just carried out one of the best Technical SEO audits of my career, uncovering issues that would have been costing the company millions. The feedback there was ‘Janine you are totally brilliant at Technical SEO audits! But you are totally shit at writing!’ Again, Nice!
At the time that comment crushed me. My response to that now is….. ‘Watch me!’
I’m not the best at writing and I don’t pretend to be. I might not write in the same style as the person who said that to me (thank goodness) but I’m pretty certain I’m not ‘shit!’ Also, like everyone, I now have ChatGPT to check if my Technical Audits need to flow a little better so my clients get the best of both worlds…my insightful audits, written in a style that I choose. What’s not to love? 🤷🏼♀️
