How to handle a sites technical elements during a site re-design – Re-Cap

  1. Create 301 re-directs for all URL’s from the original version of the site pointing to the new URL’s on the re-designed site.
  2. Review your analytics for the top 100 or 50 domains sending traffic to the moved/eliminated pages and contract as many webmasters as possible to change their links.
  3. Review a back-link report as No 2 above.
  4. Update your sitemap  and submit to search console and Bing webmaster tools.
  5. Use multiple sitemaps for each content type to submit and monitor the indexing of your new site URL’s
  6. Monitor your rankings and use Search Console help forum if you notice a drop.
  7. Monitor your Search Console Account and Google Analytics for 404 errors and to see how well Google is handling your 301’s
  8. Maintain the XML sitemap of old URL’s until search engines discover the 301’s
